I was lucky when, for
the final match against Arsenal I was able to procure 2 tickets
in the West stand for myself and my father who had taken me to that
first match, back in 1963. Although a diehard fan he was never particularly
demonstrative when Saints scored but when MLT swivelled to hit that
shot into the Arsenal net, in the dying minutes of The Dell’s
existence, he was on his feet with the rest of us. We lingered in
the stand as the crowd slowly dispersed both of us reluctant to
finally leave a place that had given us so many memories and provided
much emotion. With lumps in our throats through the elation of witnessing
one of The Dell’s greatest sons giving us probably the most
emotional moment of all we walked down the steps that led from the
seats and I turned to take one last photograph - our last view!
