Dell Diamond

Reviews...

When initially published in hardback, this biography attracted favourable reviews from the national football magazines:

DELL DIAMOND charts the first six decades of Ted Bates’s Southampton existence. And it does one heck of a job. It makes for nostalgic reading for older Saints; should be required reading for younger Saints fans; and is absorbing reading for any fans with even a passing interest in how the game has evolved (FourFourTwo).

Painstaking research is reflected in the fascinating memories, quotes and anecdotes that appear in the text and a wide variety of illustrations… The launch of this sumptuous and revealing book attracted more than 650 players, officials and fans to pay tribute to one of the true gentlemen of the game. You don’t need to be a Saint to enjoy this excellent biography (WINGER – The Review of British Football).

And when updated in 2003, with a new final chapter, it was again well-received:

The tale of Ted Bates’s career is in many ways the tale of Southampton FC… This second edition, brought out to commemorate him after his death in 2003, is also in many ways a history of the club… The book owes much to a large number of interviews with Bates’s friends, family and colleagues, as well as with the subject himself. These are used to provide lively tales that capture something of the spirit of the time and help the book avoid the hole of endless match descriptions that so many biographies fall into… The author was ‘forever running into expressions of admiration and affection’ for Bates [but] where a less rosy picture did emerge – for example the dressing room tensions caused by Bates being married to the club’s assistant secretary – then the book does not shy away from it… Indeed, it is such accounts that form the most fascinating parts of the book and offer an insight into the non-public culture of football clubs. Perhaps most poignant is the final chapter where Bates’s final years suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease are recounted (Soccer History).
